Finding the right travel health insurance for your trip

We’ve spoken at length about travel insurance on the site, but one topic that we have neglected concerns picking a policy that is optimized for your medical history and the kind of trip you are taking. You may find a highly affordable policy when conducting a simple internet search, but any old travel insurance policy may not be suitable for your particular situation. This is why it’s important to first figure out the nature of your trip while also defining your medical history.

Different trips require different policies

If you are planning on taking a short jaunt through Western Europe, that type of travel insurance you need may be different than that required for a trip to West Africa or Southeast Asia. While it’s true that a medical emergency can happen anywhere, developing world countries may present additional variables, such as the risk of malaria or other tropical infections diseases.

In addition, if you are planning on doing certain activities during your trip, you may need to take a special kind of insurance policy. For example, if you are planning on doing any skiing or other adventure sports, such as scuba diving or kayaking, you may have to pay a slightly hire premium to receive adequate coverage. There is good reason for this, and insurance companies have made calculations based on the risk involved.

Your medical history could be a factor

Some people are under the impression that it’s impossible to find travel insurance that covers pre-existing conditions. While this may have been the case at some point, there are now a number of quality providers that are offering coverage for those with pre-existing conditions.

You can find medical travel insurance advantages with certain companies, such as Avanti. These are companies that have a proven track record when it comes to providing extensive coverage for those with pre-existing conditions. Whether you have mental health issues, a chronic medical condition or a history of illness, there is a travel insurance policy for you.

It should be noted, however, that you may have to pay slightly more to find accommodating policies of this nature. That said, the extra cost is worth it in every case, and you should never risk traveling with insufficient coverage. After all, if a travel insurance policy is not going to cover you in cases where you’ll need it, it’s not worth it to take out a a policy in the first place.
